Apprentice aiming to be a model engineer

AN apprentice engineer is looking to build a somewhat different career... as a model.
Sophie Irving, whose only previous modelling experience was as a finalist in last year’s Miss Auckland competition, has made it to the final 100 girls in the Grid Girl calendar contest organised by The Kerri Parker Academy.
The 20-year-old from Etherley said the calendar had helped launch the careers of top models including Jordan, Melinda Messenger and Kerri Parker.
Sophie, who is a year-and-a-half away from completing an apprenticeship in engineering, said: “I only applied as a joke and was completely shocked when I got down from 400 to the last 100.
“It came completely out of the blue but because it was a spur of the moment thing and I’ve done quite well I’d like to see where it goes.”
Sophie insists, however, that her main career goal is to be an engineer.
She said: “It’s something I really enjoy, people are surprised because it’s such a manly job where as I’m a real girly girl but it has interested me since I was 15. Until then I’d wanted to be a vet.
“The modelling would be fun but it wouldn’t last forever. That’s why I will finish this apprenticeship because it’s always best to have qualifications to fall back on.”
Despite getting a buzz from the modelling, Sophie admits to shying away from the limelight.
She said: “I’ve never liked promoting myself which is why I haven’t made a big song and dance out of it. However, it’s such a good opportunity that I want to give it a go which is why I need people to support me.”
Sophie needs votes to finish in the final two guaranteeing her a spot as either Miss March or Miss April.
