Confusion over Commercial Yard

Sep 4, 2002

CONFUSION reigns as to whether the businesses in Commercial Yard at Barnard Castle will have to vacate in two weeks or if they have won a reprieve for a further six months.

The yard is due to be redeveloped for housing but on Saturday Alan Jackson, of The Chattery antique shop, told the Mercury that an agreement had been reached enabling the businesses to open as usual until the end of February.

But on Monday he was confused to have received a notification for final rent for the two weeks up to September 14. “We are totally confused, we wanted to advertise that we are still open,” he said.

Landlord David Deacon said he would not comment on the issue.
