Dale man’s delight at being awarded MBE

Jun 23, 2009

A senior police officer from Teesdale has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Geoff Knupfer, from Lartington, receives the honour after more than four decades of public service.

The 61-year-old forensics expert is currently leading the team searching for the ‘Disappeared’ victims in Northern Ireland, and also serves as the deputy chairman of the Association of Special Constabulary Chief Officers.

During 30 years with Greater Manchester Police, Mr Knupfer investigated a number of well-known cases, including that of the Moors murders.

He left Manchester as a Detective Chief Superintendent, and became Chief Officer of Durham Special Constabulary in 1998.

Mr Knupfer said the MBE, awarded for services to the police, has come as a surprise.
“When I got the letter about four weeks ago, it came completely out of the blue,” he said. “I am absolutely delighted.”
