Date for County Bridge repairs

Aug 22, 2002

WORK on the damaged County Bridge, at Barnard Castle, will take place, as expected, on September 9.

A 50 ton and a 20 ton crane will be used to repair a 40 metre section of the bridge which was damaged after a collision with an HGV in May.

The work will be carried out from access platforms on specially constructed scaffolding in the river.

The scaffolding is to be constructed in the week beginning September 2, with work starting on the bridge on September 9. Work is expected to last two weeks, and a further week to take down the scaffolding.

Durham County Council said temporary traffic lights will operate throughout the work but delays are not expected.

A Wesley plaque is back on the re-developed Hole in the Wall in Barnard Castle, but the mystery still remains about where it has been while the property was being converted into flats.

The distinctive blue plaque detailing how Wesley preached from there before the Methodists had their own chapel in Barnard Castle, was reported missing on Sunday, May 5 by town historian, Alan Wilkinson, who noticed it had gone – before the builders moved in, he thinks.

He said on Monday at a town planning meeting that he was pleased to see a sign was back up and wanted to ensure it stayed put. “It looks the same and it’s got the same wording on it,” said Coun Wilkinson.

Councillors agreed that it should be fitted with special screws to ensure it is not removed.

A MAN will appear before magistrates next week charged with the theft of over £60,000 worth of jewellery from a Staindrop shop.

The 37 year-old painter-decorator from Deorna Court, Darlington, answered bail at Bishop Auckland on Saturday and was charged with theft.

He will appear before Sedgefield magistrates next Wednesday, in connection with the theft from the Tea Shop on Front Street.

Approximately £66,800 of customised jewellery, including two gold Rolex watches worth £30,000 and a diamond necklace and ring worth £12,000, was stolen from the shop in early July this year.

The jewellery was later recovered by police.

TWO 12 year-old boys from Barnard Castle have appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged rape of a 13 year-old girl.

One boy has been accused of rape and indecent assault at his home on April 12, and the other with aiding and abetting rape.

They were remanded on bail at Teesside Crown Court until next month.
