Election at Startforth
Aug 15, 2002
AN election will be held on Thursday,
September 5, to fill the Startforth with Boldron seat left vacant on Teesdale council following the death of long-serving member, Eddie Scott.
Nominations had to be in by 12 noon on Thursday. Three candidates will be contesting the seat, only one of whom is politically affiliated.
They are: Sidney Hill, of Dene Road, Barnard Castle, the Conservative Party; Keith Jones, of Horse Market, Barnard Castle and Keith Watson of Ullathorne Rise, Startforth.
Trio all ship-shape
THREE members of Hamst-erley WI are featured in the August edition of the national institute magazine, Home & Country.
Under the headline of Making Waves, and pictured in a Teesdale Mercury photo, are Sue Davis, Carolyn Robinson and Ann Richards, who completed a five-day sailing challenge from Southampton to Dieppe on the tall ship Prince William.
The brave trio had only half a day’s training before they boarded their ship and Ann, who lives in Barnard Castle, gives her verdict of the whole experience as “wonderful and really exciting, a life-changing experience.”
Opening delayed
THE Meet the Middletons Visitor Centre is still having to delay its opening because of a £30,000 shortfall in funding.
The centre above the Co-op supermarket in Middleton-in-Teesdale was due to open at Easter. However, a potential funder dropped out leaving the centre £30,000 short of its £320,000 target.
This £30,000 has not yet been found and the date for the opening of the centre remains unclear.
“Obviously we’re disappointed,” said Judith Mashiter, co-ordinator of the Middleton Plus development trust. “At the moment we’re trying to get funding all over the place, but these things take a long time.”
The visitor centre is being built in phases. At the moment, the building has been completely refurbished. However, funding is still needed for the visitor interpretation displays.
“We really don’t know the date when we will open,” said Judith Mashiter. “It depends on when the funding comes in.”
