Racial abuse at takeaway
Aug 15, 2002
POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a racist incident in Barnard Castle on Friday, August 2.Insp Dave Allaway told the Mercury: “Two white females went into a takeaway shop in the town at 9.50pm to get some food. When the shop owner told them the ovens were not working properly the females became very abusive, making many racist comments at the shop owner.
“We already have the name of one of the suspects, but there were a number of people in the vicinity who witnessed the incident and we are asking them to come forward,” said Insp Allaway, who did not want to identify the premises.
• Four people have been arrested in connection with a series of burglaries and deceptions involving credit cards last week in Barnard Castle.
Insp Allaway is giving the thumbs up to a scheme whereby credit card holders booking bed and breakfast and other services are asked to give a thumbprint whenever they make a transaction.
Insp Allaway, who is being asked to chair a local theft and handling task group committee, told us: “I don’t think it would be a problem for anyone. It is something I have been thinking about for some time.”
Insp Allaway is also keen to try and obtain funding for small retail shops to have CCTV cameras installed.
• Police are also investigating an incident at the Castle Wall wine bar, Barnard Castle, following Scott Leathers’ open day on Saturday, August 3.
“There was an altercation, and two or three assaults took place,” said Insp Allaway. “Police enquiries are still ongoing, but one of the superbike riders, who attended the opening, suffered a dislocated shoulder, and an event at Croft was subsequently cancelled. Again, we should like to speak to anyone who saw any of the incidents.”

• Thomas Brett Wilkinson, 41, has been found fit and well after being missing from his home at Evenwood for a week.
