Prayers answered with perfect day for carnival

MIDDLETON’s prayers were answered on Saturday when the rain finally stopped to allow a perfect day for their carnival.

“It’s been wonderful today,” said June Kneller, the carnival committee’s press secretary. “I was so happy when I woke up this morning. On Friday, I could have cried.”

The carnival procession returned to its original route, after having to be changed because of Foot and Mouth restrictions last year.

“There’s a lot more people compared to last year,” said Mrs Kneller. “It’s good to see that things worked smoothly despite the restrictions from the police.”

The full results from the carnival were: Car Treasure Hunt – Stephen Mitchell and team.

Bicycle races – 5 to 6 years, Adam Dent. 7 to 8 years, Ryan Coll. 9 to 10 years. Dominic Bainbridge. Girls 11 years and over, Laura French. Boys 11 years and over, Martin Kneller. Overall winners – Adam Dent, Ryan Coll and Dominic Bainbridge.

Fell Race – Male junior, Callum Tallentire. Male adult, Paul Kelly. Female adult, Dawn Richardson.

Floats – 1 Chamber of Trade Trophy, ‘Brownies Flower Folk,’ 1st Upper Teesdale Brownies; 2 ‘Adams Family,’ Watson family and co; 3 ‘Havelock Cottage,’ Bowron family; 4 ‘Lord of the Rings,’ Daleview caravan park.

Walkers – Under 5s. 1 Jenny Teward, Teddy Bears Picnic; 2 James Schofield, Knight; 3 Leon Kindleyside, soldier.
