Teesdale and Weardale Mountain Search andRescue Team, and a police helicopter were also called out.

Fire Brigade community safety officer,David Turnbull, said: "The man had a lucky escape. It was a good job someonewas with him because, if he was on his own, things could have been verydifferent.

"He could have been down there all night,or longer, and that's when other issues, such as hypothermia, come into play."

The fire crews were first at the scene andfaced tough conditions, Mr Turnbull said.

He said: "It was a difficult job for us. Wehad to really think about how we were going to get him out."

Firefighters, who rescued the man justbefore 1am, used a footbridge to get access to the site.

"The crews did extremely well and deservepraise for their efforts. They did a great job. Why the two were walking outthere in the dark is anyone's guess," Mr Turnbull said.

The man was airlifted to hospital with headinjuries and later released.
