Motorists warned of road closures

May 15, 2008

Roads will be closed in Barnard Castle next week to accommodate the annual Whit fun fair.

The road closure order will be in force for the duration of the event, from the afternoon of Wednesday, May  21, until midnight on Monday, May 26.

Traffic management staff and Teesdale District Council's car park warden will direct vehicles away from Galgate car park, from 4pm on the Wednesday - particularly returning shoppers who have been using the parking area.

"The co-operation of residents, visitors and businesses will be greatly appreciated, at that time, and for the duration of the fair," said Teesdale District Council's chief executive, Neil Stokell.

The fair will operate at the following times: Thursday, May 22, 6pm-10pm; Friday, May 23, 6pm-10pm; Saturday, May 24, noon-10pm; Sunday, May 25, noon-6pm; Monday, May 26, noon-9pm.

The area immediately surrounding the car park will be affected, with access blocked from King Street, Queen Street and Galgate. Signage will inform people about the car park closure and direct traffic away from this area and onwards to the Hole-in-the-Wall car park. There is however a certain amount of flexibility built in to allow delivery vehicles access to the area.

Additional closures will be put in place on Bank Holiday Monday while the carnival procession makes its way through the town. All routes into and out of the town will be blocked between 12.30pm and 2.15pm

"A considerable amount of consultation has been undertaken with the residents and the businesses around the Galgate car park to ensure that the optimum solution was decided and put into action for this year's Meet," Mr Stokell added. "We want people enjoying the Meet to do so in safety."
