John's third stint as town mayor

May 13, 2008

IT was third time lucky for Cllr John Yarker when he was voted in as Barnard Castle's new town mayor on Monday night.

Cllr Yarker has already served in the post twice before and after being unanimously elected by his fellow town councillors, he was presented with the chains of office.

Before the outgoing mayor, Cllr John Blissett, handed over mayoral duties to his successor he told the meeting he had been proud to have held the prominent position.

He said: "During my time in office I have opened up talks with Teesdale District Council and have started a relationship with them, albeit a late relationship with them going next year, but we have a good dialogue now."

He also said that when he first came to the town he never expected to stay in the area, let alone become part of the town council or mayor, and added that he had enjoyed a wonderful year in office.

Cllr David Blackie was elected as Mayor Yarker's deputy.
