Care home extension could lead to jobs boost

May 8, 2008

AMBITIOUS plans to double the size of a dale care home could provide new jobs for the area.

Proposals have been lodged with Teesdale District Council for a major extension to Whorlton Grange Residential Care Home.

The complex is situated on the outskirts of Whorlton village, and the proposals have already received the thumbs-up from the local parish council.

District planners are currently considering the application, with a view to making a site visit, but the home's owner said he hoped his proposals are approved so that he can provide more first class facilities for residents.

Dr Rashpal Bhachu, who took over Whorlton Grange last October, said if the scheme gets the go-ahead, a further 20 bedrooms will be added to the care home, and the current staff of 23 could almost be doubled.

If the plans go ahead, the extension will also include an extra bathroom and a large resident's lounge.

Whorlton Grange caters for residents with a range of needs.

As well as providing residential care, the home also looks after people with dementia and those who are classified as elderly mentally infirm.
