ELECTION LIVE: Big wins for Tories in Teesdale

May 2, 2008

1.15am: THE Conservatives are celebrating after sweeping to victory in Teesdale, taking five out of a possible six seats.

Tories Jo Fergus, George Richardson, Richard Bell (pictured below at the count), Barbara Harrison and Stephen Hugill have all been elected to sit on the new unitary authority.

Labour's Pauline Charlton, in the Evenwood ward, was the only non-Conservative winner.

The Teesdale Independents, dominant in Teesdale for many years, won no seats, with district council leader, Richard Betton one of the highest-profile losers. He missed out by just eight results.

Labour stalwart, John Priestley, was another well-known casualty, missing out by a mere 15 votes.

Turn out was better than expected. In Barnard Castle West, 44 per cent of the electorate cast their vote, the turn out in Barnard Castle East was 39 per cent, while in Evenwood, the figure was 34 per cent.

Because of the close results there was a recount in all three wards.
