ELECTION LIVE: Labour wins overall control

2am: LABOUR has won overall control of the new unitary council for County Durham, but only just.

The party's majority has been reduced after inroads by other parties. 

The Conservatives, who fared well in Teesdale, struggled to pick up seats elsewhere. 

It appears that turnout was much higher than anticipated.
