Getting all lit up for Christmas already!
Jul 2, 2002
THIS year`s Christmas Festival will be focussed around the town centre to maximise benefit to Barnard Castle.
The festival committee on Monday said that its ice rink, fireworks display and Victorian community market should be at the Scar Top area, subject to approval, rather than at the Bowes Museum, as suggested before.
This would benefit traders and be more convenient for those attending, members agreed. It is hoped the children`s procession will start from outside St Mary`s Parish Church, and proceed to Scar Top, subject to police
confirmation.
A fund-raising effort is now being launched in addition to money pledged by the town council. Funding co-ordinator, Jeanette Thompson, identified Awards For All and the Northern Rock Foundation as potential sources, but recommended sponsorship also be pursued at the regional level of large companies involved in Barnard Castle. One had already expressed an interest and needed more information. Market Towns Partnership funding of £7,500pa over three years, to be matched locally, is being pursued.
The festival starts with carol singing by the tree on November 29, with main events, including the procession, over the weekend of December 14/15. Included this year will be a Churches Together Carols Service on December 20 or 21 and a sponsored Christmas tree festival.
Sparkling effect bulbs, more vandal and weather proof, have arrived for the Butter Market, and Galgate will be lit up with Harlequin sparkling bulbs in four colours. Three more lighting columns will be upgraded, to help bridge the gap, and five festoons are being purchased.
