Poacher attacks gamekeeper

Jul 2, 2002

A Raby Estates gamekeeper was attacked by a poacher on Raby land at Hilton on Friday.

The gamekeeper was sitting in a Land Rover at about 11pm when he was approached by one of four poachers who punched him, causing a cut behind his

ear, police said.

The men are believed to have been driving a red Subaru Legacy estate car, and police would like to know if anyone saw anything or could give a registration number of the vehicle.

Insp David Allaway, of Barnard Castle police, told the Mercury: "These attacks happen spasmodically. Farmers don`t mind the odd rabbit being taken, but sometimes there is an altercation. Often these people are looking for property to steal."

The gamekeeper did not need hospital treatment. Raby Estates said yesterday they did not want to make a comment on the incident.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Wilson at Barnard Castle police office on 01833 637328.
