Ingleton beat the drum

Jun 19, 2002

PUPILS at Ingleton Primary School were moving to a different beat, when they had the opportunity to learn about the rhythms of African drum music.

Robert Maseko, co-director of The Forge, the arts education agency for County Durham, had brought along four traditional African drums and other rhythm instruments, as part of county-wide project to involve children in the arts of different countries and cultures.

Mr Maseko gave demonstrations of the music and got the pupils to play the instruments themselves. He said: “It’s great to see children enjoying the music of a different culture.”
