Jubilee celebrations
May 29, 2002
UNION Jacks, bunting and balloons are going up all over
Teesdale for a grand, glorious, long weekend of celebrations for the
Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
The bunting also went up on Sunday morning for the Barnard Castle Jubilee Meet 2002, which the organisers are hoping to make really special.
Meet treasurer, Steve Wilson, said entries are coming in thick and fast for the many events that have been planned since last July.
“We are hoping this will be a bumper weekend of fun, and we already have at least 33 entries for our jubilee shop-window competition,” said Mr Wilson.
“We are once again offering all the traditional events, including the Meet Fayre, Not The Boat Race and the procession. This year’s events have taken a lot of planning and we are hoping to make it a good one after the disappointment of having to cancel last year because of the FMD,” he said.
“Even then, last year, hundreds of people turned up, expecting that there would be a procession. With fine weather this year, there could be thousands.”
This year’s Meet has been partly funded by a £1,000 Events Grant from Teesdale Marketing Ltd and the variety night last Christmas raised £1,000. Programmes are a vital source of income, as is the collection during the procession on Monday.
“This is absolutely key, to give us money for next year, so please dig deep into your pockets,” said Mr Wilson. Businesses have also rallied round with support, he said.
