Mercury man’s top award

May 22, 2002

A RETIRED editor of the Teesdale Mercury

was given a top accolade by his colleagues in the newspaper industry at an awards ceremony in Newcastle on Saturday night.

Jim McTaggart, who edited the paper for 22 years until his retirement two years ago, received the Graeme Stanton Award recognising his outstanding contribution to journalism and the newspaper industry.

Last year the annual award went to no less than Harold Evans and it was presented to Mr McTaggart by David Yelland, editor of The Sun, whom he met for the first time.

“Actually, I told them I was a bit embarrassed about it all, but everyone was very nice and said I had put in the work over the years – and the Mercury got a good mention!” said Mr McTaggart on Monday morning.
