Teesdale's own radio station granted permanent licence

Feb 21, 2006

TEESDALE'S very own community radio station has been given the green light to start broadcasting on a full-time basis.

Radio Teesdale was granted a five-year licence after its application for full-time broadcasting was approved by radio station regulator Ofcom.

The station's previous trial broadcasts operated under a restricted licence that only covered a five-six-mile radius of Barnard Castle but the new licence will improve quality and range of the signal, extending coverage to a wider area of Teesdale.

Chairman of Radio Teesdale, Alastair Dinwiddie, described the news as "fantastic" and said: "Our target is to start full-time broadcasts in about nine months time. Now the work really starts!"

Since Radio Teesdale's last trial broadcast 15 months ago, its members have been working behind the scenes creating programmes and preparing for future broadcasts.

There is a great deal to do before the station starts 24 hour continuous broadcasting, such as raising funds, recruiting and training volunteers, and establishing and developing premises.

The station would welcome support from individuals and organisations across Teesdale, and is inviting anyone who is interested to come forward. No previous experience is necessary.

Operations Director Peter Dixon said: "Our vision is that any organisation and individual in Teesdale that wishes to do so, can contribute in whatever capacity suits their needs. This is a major project for our area. It is truly an initiative that is for the people of Teesdale by the people of Teesdale."
