Horrible Science - Sunderland Empire

Jun 23, 2010

HORRIBLE Science, written by Nick Arnold and presented by The Birmingham Stage Company is one of those shows which will engage children who love or hate science due to the exciting way it portrays the subject, which is a million miles away from what happens in science teaching in the classroom.

The story is based around a computer, or The Intelligent Machine as it is known, as it threatens to unleash the contents of the science museum around the world to devastating effects. Three scientists, played by Laura Dalgleish, Benedict Martin and Sarah Nightingale, run the museum which contains four zones microscopic monsters, fatal forces, shocking electricity and blood, bones and body bits. Up steps schoolboy Billy Miller played by Gareth Warren to save the planet by learning aspects of science, which handily all appear on the Key Stage 2 science curriculum.

As you would expect apart from the obvious elements of science, the horrible side has to include the bathroom, more specifically the toilet, which due to the 3D special effects in the second half, gets across the importance of washing hands in a way children will never have seen before.

Although the science covered is not complicated, it is presented in an exciting and entertaining way which certainly engaged the children in the audience of primary school age.
