Dreamboats and Petticoats - Sunderland Empire

May 8, 2010

DREAMBOATS and Petticoats is a typical jukebox musical featuring music from the 50s and 60s, inspired by the album of the same name it features many well known hits including Bobby's Girl, Only Sixteen, Great Pretender and Let's Twist Again to name just a few. The action is mainly set in St Mungo's Youth Club in Essex, with the story revolving around a song writing competition where Norman, played by Jonathan Bremner, desperate to write a song, just keeps coming up with new lyrics to existing music.  Laura, played by Danielle Bowen and Bobby, played by Josh Capper, also enter the competition, romance blossoms throughout, but does not always run smoothly.

The music is the highlight of this show with the cast playing the instruments live on stage as well as singing over 40 hits throughout the evening. The choreography, by Carole Todd, is superb and incredibly slick, bringing in a number of comic moments especially during Poetry in Motion and Shop Around. The story uses individual lines from the music very well to enhance and drive the story forward.

Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, well known for their comedy television hits Birds of a Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart, this gentle story has all the ingredients for a fantastic nights entertainment.

Dreamboats and Petticoats runs at Sunderland Empire until Saturday 8th May.
