HULL Truck Theatre Company arrived at The Georgian Theatre in Richmond with their latest touring production ‘Me and Me Dad' I have been a follower of Hull Truck for many years and have never been disappointed with the quality of their shows. Just before the show began I overheard a conversation between two friends, "It's Hull Truck, they're really famous, you'll love it" Great advice to anyone, you just can't go wrong with Hull Truck.Me and Me Dad is written by Nick Lane, Hull Truck's Associate Director, and is the sequel to ‘My Favourite Summer' though you don't have to have seen this play first. The story begins with Pete and Dave, father and son, just after the funeral of their wife/mother. Dave played by Matthew Booth decides he should put his acting career on hold to live with his father, Pete, played by Eamonn Fleming, to teach him how to cook as it was Jean, his wife who did all the cooking. The relationship between Pete, Dave and the recently departed Jean, played by Úna McNulty is told through flashbacks as well as scenes in the present with Jean watching carefully over them.
Úna McNulty also plays all the female roles in the play supplying the best comic moments in her portrayal of Auntie Joyce, the next door neighbour. The main theme of the play, coping with and coming to terms with the loss of a loved one, gives us many scenes of poignancy which certainly brought tears to the eyes of my companion. With brilliant acting and just the right amount of comedy blended with the touching relationship between father and son, Hull Truck have certainly done it again.
Me and Me Dad can also be seen at Darlington Arts Centre on Thursday 29th April and Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Friday 30th April.
