When Harry Met Sally - Sunderland Empire

Apr 15, 2010

I OFTEN wonder when I go to see a show which is better known as a book, a TV classic or in this case a film, if I am at a disadvantage. I will probably never know, but When Harry Met Sally certainly brought out a large number on opening night at Sunderland. The story, for those that don't know the film, in simple terms is boy meets girl and over twelve years, as they search for their perfect partners they become friends and fall in love with each other.

Unfortunately on the night I attended Rupert Hill, due to play Harry, was unavailable, this allowed for all the male cast to change roles as Luke Rutherford stepped up to play Harry, Callum McArdle to play Jack and Steve Arnott, well known in our area for his panto roles, to play Joe and Ira. Although the play was very slow in the first half this was not due to any cast changes as I found the acting excellent throughout. I found the second half flowed much better with the comedy coming together especially in the matchmaking scene in the restaurant.

Scene changes were covered by music from Ben and Jamie Cullum as well as voiceovers from couples relating romantic memories, which all added an extra touch and worked very well. The set was at first glance very simple, but was thoughtfully constructed to allow for the many scenes required.

This is a very light hearted show, if you loved the film, then this is a show for you.
