Popstar The Musical - Darlington Civic Theatre

Apr 9, 2010

REALITY TV is everywhere, you can't avoid it, love it or hate it. Can a musical based on this really work? It most definitely can.

The show revolves around 6 contestants hoping they have the ‘Extra Factor'.  The action moves between the TV studio to flashbacks in the contestant's house, through the use of a simple but cleverly designed set. We hear each contestant sing with music ranging from ‘Summer of '69' - Bryan Adams, ‘Gonna Make You A Star' - David Essex to ‘You Raise Me Up' - Westlife.  We also discover who gets on with who and the secrets in their lives outside the house.

The audience soon have their favourites and it is the audience who decide the winner by texting for their favourite during the interval.

The cast is fantastic with Sarah Jane Buckley as Gina and Ciara Janson as Ellie both well known from Hollyoaks, Rob McVeigh from Any Dream Will Do as Jamie, Antony Costa from Blue as Cal, John Altman from Eastenders as Ray and Miranda Wilford as Harriet making up the final contestant. For me though the star of the show was Sam Kane as Ricky the host of the show, he has always been fantastic in the shows I have seen him in, he creates such a rapport with the audience.

There is a lot of humour in this show, which is certainly aimed at adults. This is a fantastic nights entertainment.

Popstar The Musical is on at The Darlington Civic Theatre until Saturday 10th April.
