The Tart and the Vicar’s Wife - Darlington Civic Theatre

Dec 2, 2009

AS the title suggests this play is a traditional farce. It follows the story of Glenda, played by Linda Armstrong, the bored Vicar's wife who is in need of extra money, to fund the lifestyle she had before her successful husband survived a car crash and became a Vicar.

As the vicar embarks on a residential course enter Joe Carpenter, played by Matt Healy, definitely the highlight of this production. Joe is looking for someone to exorcise his house, but instead leads Glenda and her friends who are all desperate for money, to become high class escorts for a night with the help of his friend Selina, played by Danielle Johnson.

Throughout the play, during the many cups of coffee, we find out more about each of the characters and their reasons for needing the extra money. This does at times make the pace of the play very slow. The pace increased and the play lifted each time Matt Healy entered providing the best comic moments.

Amongst the very slow dialogue and unbelievable twists to the story, there were though some great one-liners.
