Dancing in the Streets - Darlington Civic Theatre

Oct 15, 2009

THERE are a lot of shows which are a selection of well known tracks from a particular era, with a storyline thrown in to create a show. Thankfully this doesn’t follow that formula. This is a concert style recreation telling the exceptional story of Motown.

When Berry Gordy formed his own record company in 1959, no one would have predicted the explosion of Motown throughout the world. This show tells the story through the music with part narration. The hits come fast and loud, even if you are not a Motown fan and whatever your age you will recognise these hits. From Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, my favourite in the first half had to be Stevie Wonder. As ever in these shows you often just want the second half to start as you know the tempo will be raised and you can always expect something special. I was not disappointed The Temptations were brilliant and it wasn’t long before the audience were on their feet dancing.

The whole theatrics of this production are faultless from the sound, lighting, fabulous costumes, choreography, the 8 piece band and of course the singing.

Dancing in the Streets is at Darlington Civic Theatre until Saturday, October 17
