Dreamboats and Petticoats - Darlington Civic Theatre

Sep 24, 2009

IF you are looking for a fast paced show full of energy and familiar 60s music, then Dreamboats and Petticoats is for you.

Although the story is very predictable and there is a cheesy element to some of the links to the music. It works incredibly well. I have always been a bit dubious of shows which link lots of existing songs together to form a story, but I have to admit they have there place and this is one of the best I have seen. With a live band on stage the action doesn’t stop with over 40 songs, not all full versions, slick choreography and a great set.

Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, well known for writing the comedies Birds of a Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart, meant that we were treated to many great one liners.

It is hard to identify one single performance as the whole cast are so talented but I was mesmerised by Bethany Compson-Bradford playing Daisy and Brenda as well playing the saxophone.

My companion for the evening summed it up perfectly as a hilarious non-stop English musical version of Happy Days.
