Review of Magic of the Dance - Darlington Civic Theatre
Jul 24, 2009
THIS show never fails to impress not only with the superb dancing at incredible speed, but also the technical brilliance from the projected images, fantastic costumes, atmospheric music and when you throw in some dry ice and some excellent pyrotechnics you don’t get chance to pause for breath. With some shows they save the best for the finale, with Magic of the Dance it is a finale from start to finish.
The show is based loosely on a story of two young lovers, Michelle Lawrence and Ciaran Maguire, in Ireland at the dawn of the great famine. They leave for America where demons find them and they are separated, but they are predictably reunited in the final scenes. The story is not essential, but it does give a point to it all.
Part of the show is broken up with an American tap section led brilliantly by Bryan Berry. Not only does this break up the style of dance it also adds a comic dimension. Although I again wasn’t that impressed with the audience participation where three audience members are taught some dance moves. It did feel slicker this time and the audience loved it.
If dance shows are not normally your thing, you should give this a try and you might just change your mind.
Magic of the Dance is on at Darlington Civic Theatre until Saturday, July 25.
