Rattle of a Simple Man - Darlington Civic
The Ian Dickens Summer Rep Season, now celebrating its 10th year, opened with Rattle of a Simple Man by Charles Dyer. As with most Ian Dickens plays they star a number of well known names with this play starring Hannah Waterman from Eastenders and Huw Higgenson from The Bill.
The story tells of football fanatic Percy, played by Huw Higgenson, who whilst on a football trip to London accepts a bet to spend a night with Cyrenne a call girl, played by Hannah Waterman.
When this play was first performed in 1962 it will have raised a few eyebrows due to the content. For this modern day audience this was not going to happen. You often approach this kind of play with trepidation as it might have worked in 1962 but will it work in 2009.
Thankfully it did and all credit has to go to Ian Dickens for recognising the quality of the script and having two actors with such chemistry between them created such a fast paced and an intriguing production. Plays of this nature for me are always slow to start, this play was no different, but it was the quality of the acting and the interpretation of the script that drew you in. I for one can’t wait for the rest of this season.

Killing Time - Darlington Civic
THE Ian Dickens Summer Rep Season continues with Killing Time by Richard Stockwell starring Huw Higgenson and Hannah Waterman from last week's play.
After a ‘chance’ meeting in a supermarket two ‘strangers’ Rick, played by Huw Higgenson and Jane, played by Hannah Waterman find themselves together in this murderous thriller.
As with last week's play ‘Rattle of a Simple Man’ Huw Higgenson and Hannah Waterman work brilliantly together. This play is very much driven by the dialogue and once the scene is set in the first half the pace doesn’t slow down. There are so many twists, turns and surprises throughout that it is at times hard to keep up. Thoroughly entertaining through out it had me hooked to the end.
