Hot Flush review

Hot Flush
Darlington Civic Theatre
THIS, I have to say, is not a show I was looking forward to, having been warned I would be one of very few males in the audience. This is certainly a show for the women, and they certainly had a great night out, though I did see a few men having a great time as well.
This new musical tells the story of four women all in different situations, who have set up the hot flush club, who meet once a week in a local bar. The simple, yet effective set, of four staging blocks allows each to tell their story in turn. They do of course all have one thing in common – the menopause.
Although all the cast were fantastic the highlights were Lesley Joseph, who was superb and Sam Kane. Sam Kane played all the male roles showing what a versatile actor he is as well as having to cope with all the women. There is a lot of innuendo, and many jokes, giving it an almost panto feel at times, but these are well spaced out between catchy original songs.
This is nowhere near your traditional musical and for my companion, who was attending a musical for the very first time, she will find her next musical very different indeed.
Hot Flush can be seen at Darlington Civic Theatre until Saturday 4th April.
