Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Darlington Civic Theatre
The classic musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers tells the story of Adam Pontipee, played by Steven Houghton, and his six brothers. Adam embarks on a mission to find himself a wife, tricking Milly, played by Susan McFadden, into marriage and looking after his brothers. Milly though undeterred transforms his brothers and they too set off looking for wives.
Steven Houghton did not have the immediate impact on stage that this role demands, though his stage presence increased as the show went on. Susan McFadden though was superb as Milly. If reality television keeps discovering talent this good I hope it continues. You could not fault her performance all night, perfect throughout. The highlight of the evening for me was ‘Goin’ Courtin’ as Milly teaches the brothers the art of ‘courtin’ with brilliantly comic scenes.
The choreography, by Chris Hocking, was outstanding as the whole cast were excellent dancers, which for me that is what made this such a fantastic show.
If I had to find an area I didn’t like about the show it would be that the transformation of the brothers was too fast and the pace slowed in second half. That said, this is theatre, and you don’t always get what you expect, but what a show!
