school crossing patrols

Durham County Council have made decisions on maintaining or removing school crossing patrols across the County according to statistical evidence on the safety of roads. However school crossing patrols should not be about road statistics, they should be about caring for our children. The ‘lollipop’ is there to help children understand about road safety, to welcome children to school and help them on their way home and to encourage parents to allow their children to walk to school. All children and their families deserve this service. Having a school crossing patrol stands as a symbol of a caring community – something that is reflected in the number of lollipop ladies and gentlemen who have received Honours this year. Durham County Council should rethink its policies and procedures. They are serving the people of County Durham and their communities, not statistics.
