The cost of spending a penny

WE are now being told that the Market Place toilets are to stay closed. Then we are informed what everybody already knows, that the 'gateway' cobbles are breaking up. Why, then, can we not provide a temporary/permanent toilet block for the workmen who will return every few months to repair the cobbles, and also allow the public to use these toilets — it could be a way of saving money for the council. Failing this, buckets could be placed in or around the council chamber and the cross-legged visitors to the town could use these. Going back to the dark ages, you may say. Well, why not? Putting cobbles on a modern highway was. What I cannot understand is why, in this civilised country, we do not have toilets with an attendant, pay 20p to 30p and have somewhere clean to use. I would dare bet that the majority of people would be only too willing to pay for the privilege of being treated like humans. Would a star rating for public toilets be a good idea? I do not know, but something has to be done because we seem to be paying more for everything and getting less from the local authority.
