New Teesdale Hotel Complex

Thomas Robinson

As a director of a hotel in Teesdale I know that recruiting staff locally is extremely difficult so to suggest that a new venture such as this would generate jobs for local people is not entirely true. I suspect that the majority of employees in such an establishment would be from outside of the area including overseas. In some ways I feel that this could raise the profile of Teesdale as a short break destination which would in turn help our hotel as we find it hard to compete with the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District. My concerns, however, are that the benefits for the surrounding businesses would be minimal as the whole concept of a destination resort such as the one being proposed is that everything is offered on site so people do not have to leave the grounds. The smaller independant operators will inevitabley suffer. Is Teesdale really about mega hotel resorts? To me its about smaller more intimate places with some history and character. Ultimately, as with most things, it will be the consumer that decides.
