Renewable energy

Ian Consterdine (Dr.)
03 Sep 2006

Madam/Sir,

Your letters page of August 30th 2006 included an interesting looking headline :: Wind turbines in the North East are not really doing their job.

I read on, expecting to find these devices weren’t generating the electric for some physical reason associated with the “North East” (whatever that may be…) but found only more geo-political absurdity from Darlington’s darling, Elizabeth Mann.

Listen, Elizabeth: When the wind blows, the electric is generated as per specification at only maintenance cost. This means there is no fuel exploration cost; no cost for fuel transport and no cost for the fuel (c.f. Drax & Hartlepool): no emitted pollution (c.f. Drax) and no radioactive waste (c.f. Hartlepool). Furthermore, since the electricity is consumed locally, transmission losses are less than in centralised power generation grids and more useful endeavour is achieved.

I guess the headline wasn’t Ms Mann’s creation but everything beneath serves only to start a fine fire. Always look on the bright side…

Sincerely,

Ian Consterdine.
